Why it’s a good idea

Through Pelena Energy’s work in Melanesian countries, Australia, and elsewhere, it has become increasingly evident that there is limited access to effective and appropriate energy-related information. Many individual energy technologies are espoused as being ‘the solution’ to addressing modern energy demands. Often the debate over specific technologies morphs into a polarised debate associated with global warming, fossil fuel vs renewables, coal seam gas, etc. Whilst this debate continues, most people across the world struggle to make relatively simple decisions, such as what type of electric light to purchase or the best way to cook a meal.

Sound, proven technologies and processes that would once have been celebrated for their diversity and contribution to society’s wellbeing, are now portrayed as heroes and villains in the ongoing debate.

Unfortunately, the polarised nature of the modern energy debate has resulted in a reduction in knowledge diversity, especially by key decision makers. Examples of energy confusion extends from households through to supposed experts advising governments. (For example, this is a government report about a solar electric program containing a cover photo of a solar hot water panel).

Globally, energy demand is increasing in conjunction with development. Globally we need to address this issue by being better informed as to what works and what doesn’t work — appropriate to our specific location and circumstances — so that not only governments but individuals and businesses can make sound energy decisions that allow for a future where health of humans and the planet are not compromised.

This is a big task, and one we believe can contribute to through the establishment of the Dorrigo Energy Centre.
