Why Dorrigo?
Dorrigo has a number of unique features that make it ideal for the proposed Dorrigo Energy Centre, including:
- History of energy innovation in the Dorrigo community, as demonstrated by the establishment of the Dorrigo hydro in 1922;
- Diverse range of natural energy sources available to demonstrate including micro-hydro, solar, and wind;
- Significant local diverse agricultural industry with high energy demands and biological farm waste able to be utilised as a diverse range of energy sources;
- Willingness in the community to take on new and innovative enterprise — a general “yearning for learning”. This extends to local schools and volunteer groups;
- Significant energy skills already in the community applicable to developing and operating such a Centre, including the presence of Pelena Energy;
- Established tourism industry, especially with the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre (attracting 130,000 visitors per year), Dangar Falls, and the Dorrigo Steam and Railway Museum (soon to open);
- Close to main transport infrastructure including Coffs Harbour Airport, Armidale Airport, Urunga Railway Station, the Pacific Highway, and the New England Highway.
